Massage Envy Announces Expansion Program Designed to Open 40 Stores in Maryland, DC and No. Virginia Marketplace Over Next Three Years

Baltimore, MD (August 11, 2008) – Massage Envy, the Scottsdale, AZ-based franchise that has opened more than 440 franchises throughout 36 states, has announced plans to expand to forty, the number of sites operating in the Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia marketplaces over the next three years. In the past year, eleven stores have opened locally, with the Potomac Yard in Arlington site slated to become operational on August 12 and the North College Park scheduled for opening in early September. Local stores are currently operational in Belair, Columbia, Pikesville and Timonium.

KLNB Retail is the exclusive leasing representative in the local marketplace with Ben Becker and Susan Kirn overseeing site selection and leasing efforts throughout the Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia marketplace. Each Massage Envy consists of approximately 2400 to 3500 square feet of space.

According to the American Massage Therapy Association, approximately 24% of all consumers in the United States received a massage over the past twelve months and, when examining statistics over the past five years, 43% of all women and 25% of all men have experienced a massage. Massage therapy, an estimated $11 billion business, is considered among the fastest growing industries in the country and is utilized for both therapeutic and health reasons.

The Massage Envy concept is membership-driven and, for a $59 monthly fee, provides one 50-minute massage on weekdays until 10 pm and during weekend operational hours. Additional massages are available at a cost of $49 per session. The consumer can choose from among six different treatments including Cranial Sacral (focusing on the head and neck), Deep Tissue, Reflexology (exclusively hands and feet), Sports, Swedish and Trigger Point (isolated in one particular area of concern).

“Massage Envy is designed to bring luxury services to the general population and it is priced appropriately to be affordable to the majority of the consumer public in our highly-affluent market,” explained Susan Kirn of KLNB Retail. “It is less expensive than many gym memberships and offers a unique value proposition to both men and women seeking to reduce stress in their daily lives or to respond to a medical condition,” she added.

Because research shows that more women than men prefer massages, the KLNB Retail program is specifically targeting retail centers that feature anchor stores that attract the female clientele. “High visibility projects in expanding demographic sections are our priority and the Maryland/Washington, D.C./Northern Virginia region has been quick to embrace our concept, which is just over one year old,” Kirn added.

“We offer a spa-like setting that respects the time-deprived customer of today, while also providing a service with meaningful mental and physical benefits that can dramatically improve a person’s well-being,” stated Eric Barton, Regional Developer for Massage Envy. With nearly thirty franchises sold, the local region set the record for the most prolific activity of any market in the country in 2007.

“Our extended weeknight and weekend hours make it easy for the homemaker and the businessperson to visit us. Massage Envy provides a one-hour escape from the stresses and strains of the real world and have generated great momentum nationally and in this market, specifically,” Barton added. “Our goal is to make sure we don’t rub our customers the wrong way,” he laughed.
